Settling The Land: Order Out of Chaos?

Showing
-

The impact of settlement on the landscape of the Wairarapa is explored through objects from the collection.  Forested land was seen as ‘wasteland’, in need of clearance to make way for pasture and crops, towns and transport. Bringing what they assumed to be "civilisation" to a seemingly wild untamed place was a prime motivation of early settlers. Highlights of the exhibition include an 1880s Hopkinson grand piano owned by the Williams family & gifted to Aratoi by Ian and Claire Athfield, and three huia.
