Rebekah Farr : Drift

Drift, a painting by Carterton artist Rebekah Farr, recently won the Highly Commended Award at the Aratoi Friends Art Awards. The work is part of a new series of paintings with the same title that follows migrant beings on their journey.
Partly inspired by Dorothea Lange's haunting and humanizing photographs of migration in America during the 1930s, Farr's paintings feature half-human creatures combined with elements of the strange and the familiar on a passage to find a better place. These curious creatures carry with them the good and the bad experiences from their past lives and they are positioned in a setting that reflects the artist's Wairarapa surrounding and landscape. While the mystery of their journey unfolds, their destination remains unknown; the track uncertain. The often unfinished quality of the oil and layered wax paintings mirrors these unfinished paths and the sense of endings unresolved.

Artists Floortalk: Saturday 6th August, 2pm.
