The Whakaki Wetlands Restoration and Enhancement Project

The Whakaki Lake Trustees have been working to restore the natural hydrology and ecology of the Whakaki Lagoon and its coastal wetland system near Wairoa, on behalf of the Maori owners.

Their multi- award winning project is in partnership with the Department of Conservation, the Hawke's Bay Regional Council, and Fish and Game Council.

Trustees Ani Brown and Robert Walker will talk about the how they began by returning the river channel to its original route and then embarked on a remarkable revival of habitats and species drawing heavily on their traditional knowledge and customary practices.
