Super Mario Bros. started out as a 1985 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the (NES). The successor to the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. and the first game in the Super Mario series.
Players control Mario, or his brother Luigi in the multiplayer mode, as they navigate through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa (later named Bowser). They traverse side-scrolling stages while avoiding hazards such as enemies and pits with the aid of power-ups such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman.
Super Mario Bros. is named as one of the greatest and bestselling video game of all time with more than 58 million copies sold worldwide. The game has been re-released several times over the last 30 years and upgraded to play on different Nintendo platforms.
Mario has become prominent in popular culture, including a long-running game series, a TV show, a Japanese anime feature film, live-action and animated feature films.
