Tetris

Tetris is a puzzle video game created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov, a Soviet software engineer. After a significant period of publication by Nintendo, the rights reverted to Pajitnov in 1996, who co-founded the Tetris Company with Henk Rogers.

The Game Boy version is one of the best-selling games of all time, with more than 118 million copies sold. Tetris is rooted within popular culture and its popularity extends beyond the sphere of video games, influencing music and architecture. Researchers are investigating the effect on the human brain following a session, called the Tetris effect.

The first player to officially beat Tetris was a 13-year-old American boy called Willis Gibson when on December 21, 2023, he triggered a kill screen on Level 157, a point where the Tetris code glitched and crashed the game.
