Hélène Carroll, Alphabet Paintings

Hélène Carroll, Alphabet Paintings are a recent acquisition to the collection.

Being the only child of parents who were survivors of the Holocaust, has had a significant influence on Carroll’s life. This series of paintings is about remembering the past and about how these memories shapes our future. These works offer insight into how one family survived and created a home for themselves in New Zealand, in the aftermath of the war. These paintings are both confronting in their subject matter yet engaging with their childish symbolism and beautiful colours.
