Date
13 October 2019, 10:30am - 11:45am

KOKOMAI WRITERS & READERS in partnership with Hedleys

From Chekov to Munro, the short story is not easy to define yet we all know a good one when we read it. Almost every writer of fiction labouring for a legacy tries it with some creating lasting works of art that are also a bloody good read: Hemingway, Mansfield, Joyce, Carver etc., etc.. And short fiction makes great films: 'The Third Man'; 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'; 'All About Eve'.

Paula Morris is one of New Zealand’s most accomplished writers and a leading practitioner in the art of short fiction. She is convenor of the Master in Creative Writing programme at the University of Auckland. She writes fiction for adults and supernatural mysteries for younger readers. Paula’s short stories are widely published and a number have been adapted for radio. Her most recent book is 'False River' (2017), a collection of stories and essays. Joining Paula in this focus on short fiction is Steve Braunias. Steve is also an accomplished writer and the author of 11 books. He works as a staff writer at the New Zealand Herald and is literary editor at The Spinoff. Steve is passionate about short fiction: “The short story! It’s a thing of wonder, a little miracle, just right, small but perfectly formed, even better when it’s small and imperfectly formed – it’s an ideal plant for New Zealand conditions, in this land of the understatement, the laconic observation, the whakataukī. It’s gone in and out of fashion but never out of practice, and its time has come again”.

Venue is Wesley Wing, Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History. Books by featured authors will be on sale in the foyer of Aratoi.
