Field Trip: Wai-āwangawanga, The Anxious River

Date
19 August 2023, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Location
Self Drive Field Trip
Stops along the Waingawa River at South Road, Skeets Road and Kaituna

Explore the Waingawa River with geologist Chris Hollis.

Haunui-a-Nanaia is said to have given the river the name of Wai-awangawanga because it seemed to be confused, disturbed or anxious with numerous meandering channels. Today the river is remarkably straight and has the steepest gradient of all the rivers flowing from the Tararua Range. This is likely due to a combination of land and river management practices and the impact of earthquakes on the fault-lines that cross the river.

On this field trip, you’ll visit three spots along the river and its tributary, Atiwhakatu Stream, and learn how the river changes during its journey to join the Ruamāhanga River and how the rocks in the river provide a window into the fascinating geology of the Tararua Ranges.
