Aratoi Director, Sarah McClintock, warmly invites you to the joint opening of our new exhibitions, Boro: Timeworn Textiles of Japan and Kaleidoscope on Thursday, 24 April from 5.30pm at Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, Masterton.

Boro: Timeworn Textiles of Japan focuses on Boro (ぼろ)- a Japanese cloth that has been repeatedly repaired by hand with a running stitch called sashiko. The term boro refers to patched, pieced, stitched and mended garments, bedding and other utilitarian items which were often hand‐dyed with indigo. This exhibition is from the Boro collection of Pip Steel.

In farming and fishing communities of Japan during the 19th and early 20th centuries, poverty, the need for resourcefulness and a culture of respect for objects, determined that a cloth’s inevitable ‘wear and tear’ necessitated repair to extend its lifespan.

This is a joint exhibition opening alongside our winter family friendly show Kaleidoscope, which explores the relationship between the science of light and art.

Featuring Gabby O'Connor's installation All The Colours, All The Light, Jane Gibbens sparkling gemstone paintings and Pat Hanly's Rainbow over Mt Eden alongside hands on experiments created by Fab Lab, Kaleidoscope creates an immersive and family friendly space that lets you play with light and notice how it changes through reflection and refraction.

A perfect exhibition to celebrate Matariki, discover how light is created, can be bent, moved or changed.
