Sashiko Stitching Workshop with artist and teacher Pip Steel inspired by her exhibition Boro - Timeworn Textiles of Japan.
You can either choose to come with a favourite item of clothing to visibly mend, or create a sashiko-stitched sampler at the workshop.
Things to Bring : Favourite scraps and materials – a variety of coloured, textured, patterned etc, (natural fibres such as cotton, denim and linen are easy to work with and could be recycled clothing/ fabric), useful hand-sewing equipment that you have – a pair small sharp sewing scissors, fabric cutting scissors, a needle with a big eye and sharp point like a tapestry or crewel needle, (or a sashiko needle if you have one), assorted threads of different thicknesses/ textures/ colours - embroidery, fine ribbon, crochet, sashiko, kogin, perle, decorative yarns, etc. from your stash if you have one. Plain and lined paper, eraser and a pen.
Or, an item of clothing to visibly repair if you choose to do this, and fabrics for mending patches and threads to suit - can be pale/ dark/ bold/ textured/contrasting/patterned/ depending on the effect you want to achieve.
Items provided: Sampler fabric backing (or bring your own piece of linen or cotton, which can be recycled fabric), tracing and transfer paper, pins, some assorted needles and threads, and a few scraps for patches for those without a stash, visual resources and inspiration.
