Salon des Refuses

The Salon Des Refuses, French for "exhibition of rejects" is generally an exhibition of works rejected by the jury of the official Paris Salon, but the term is most famously used to refer to the Salon des Refuses of 1863. In that year, artists protested the Salon jury's rejection of more than 3,000 works, far more than usual.  In response the rejected artists were allowed to exhibit their work in an annex to the regular Salon. The critical attention from the annex exhibtion legitimized the emerging avant-garde in painting.

Artists whose work is not selected for this years review have the opportunity to exhibit at a Salon des Refuses at the new Carterton Event Centre.
The Wairarapa Review VII Salon des Refuses will run from Saturday 17th December through to 4pm Sunday 5 February 2012.
