Ian St George - The iconic Orchid

Showing
-

Ian St George has created paintings which mimic Greek and Russian Orthodox iconography, with the bright colours, haloes and other-worldly symbolism.

The images are framed in gilt wood to resemble the moulded, turned and carved surrounds of icons featuring in many churches in Greece.

There is a difference which distinguishes St George's work and that is, that the subjects within the frames are not iconic Christian saints, but they are another sacred object, the exquisite New Zealand wild orchids, set in a magic landscape where they grow freely: the Wairarapa. William Colenso discovered some of the orchids; some of which are endemic to the Wairarapa.
