Esther Bunning - ANZAC flags

These flags are a tribute to the horses and mounted riflemen of WW1. They were used Wairarapa wide on ANZAC Day to commemorate both the soldiers and the horses who made up the NZ Mounted Rifles Brigade.

Esther Bunning created the flags as part of her NZ Pacific Studio Artist in Residence Fellowship 2020. The photographer worked with local communities, Including Mauriceville School children, to come up with ideas and words for the flags.

The six flags on display reference the landscape of the Wairarapa, with the hills, skylines and Tararuas in abstract form.
