Works from Lexicon and Where Do we Come From combine in the exhibition Lacuna. These two bodies of work have been developed concurrently during the past five years from Wairarapa artist Hélène Carroll; separate but also inextricably linked and enmeshed.
A lexicon is a sort of dictionary. ‘Lexicon’ is Hélène’s effort to document the various icons and symbols that frequently appear in her paintings, a journey searching for a visual language and vocabulary with which to express her ideas and to tell her stories.
The ‘Where do we come from?’ (After Gauguin) series of works are a continuation of her ongoing preoccupation with the narrative of her family's fractured past.
“I have been travelling on this path for a very long time now and I imagine that I will continue to do so, in an attempt to fill the void.” Hélène Carroll, September 2024.
