In Rooms Plus Gillian Cronin captures both the poignant and imaginative aspects of our relationship with the spaces we call home.
The paintings started as explorations of dream spaces and the way personal spaces can enhance or limit our lives. They headed in a more personal direction when Gillian’s elderly mother transitioned from a villa into a rest home apartment, and then into hospital level care. Lots of decluttering and looking at rooms was involved.
The inspiration behind these paintings emerged during the COVID years when we all spent so much time at home. It blossomed after seeing Lubaina Himid’s show at the Tate Modern in London in 2022. Here architecture and space were explored on a grand scale as one of Himid’s themes.
