Traditionally toki were an everyday tool used in cutting and digging.
A patu is a club or pounder. The word patu in Te Reo Māori means to strike, hit, beat, kill or subdue.
Patu aruhe were made from wood. They would have been used to pound aruhe, the edible root of the rauaruhe (bracken fern). The root would be dried, steeped in water, roasted, boiled, or steamed, and then pounded. The process of pounding would separate the edible flesh from the fibres.

Known to Māori as pakohe, and to geologists as metamorphosed indurated mudstone, argillite is particularly associated with the Nelson-Marlborough region in New Zealand. It is found on Rangitoto (D'Urville Island), along the Whangamoa mineral belt, and in the upper reaches of the Maitai, Wairoa and Motueka Rivers.
